Team Building Versus Team Bonding, What’s the Difference?

Last week I wrote my blog post on Team Bonding Activities Your Team Will Love, and I received some questions on the difference between team building and team bonding. So here’s the follow up!

What is the difference between Team Building and Team Bonding? Is there a difference? According to wikipedia, the definition of Team Building is a collective term for various types of activities used to enhance social relations and define roles within teams, often involving collaborative tasks. It is designed to improve the efficiency, rather than interpersonal relations of a team.

What is team bonding? While it’s much harder to find a true definition of it, everything I have researched states that it is a collective term for various types of activities used to enhance social and interpersonal relations amongst team members, so… short, the fun stuff!

Team building activities should have a debrief at the conclusion, and possibly an “ah-ha” moment, which ties-in your team activity with your work experiences and/or practices. Team bonding activities are usually more relaxed with no set outcomes except to have fun and bond. I have read numerous articles on both topics and wanted to share one in particular that sums up both quite simply and gives you guidance on which activities to choose: The Difference Between Team Building and Team Bonding.
